Credit Bureaus Not Fixing Errors? Here’s What to Do

If you’ve disputed an error on your credit report and nothing changed, you’re not alone.

Consumers frequently report problems with:
Experian
Equifax
TransUnion

Step 1: Confirm Your Dispute Was Proper

Make sure you:

Sent documentation of the dispute to the credit bureau explaining your dispute
Clearly explained the credit report error
Included identifying information about the credit report error
Any other information or documentation supporting your credit report error and credit dispute to the credit bureaus

Step 2: Understand What Went Wrong

Credit bureaus often:

Use automated systems to handle credit report errors
Ignore supporting evidence you provided of the credit report dispute and credit errors
Rely on creditors instead of investigating the credit report dispute

Step 3: Know When It Becomes Unlawful

It becomes an FCRA violation when:

The credit bureaus fail to conduct a reasonable investigation of your credit dispute
They continue reporting inaccurate information as credit report errors on your credit report

Step 4: Consider Legal Action

If the credit report error remains:
You may be able to sue the credit bureau or the furnisher of credit information for credit report errors

Why Lawsuits Work

Credit bureaus often only fix credit report issues and credit report errors when:
They are held legally accountable for violating consumer rights and the Fair Credit Reporting Act for refusing to correct credit report errors.
