ABA THERAPY ABUSE LAWYERS

AUTISM TREATMENT AND ABA THERAPY ABUSE RISK

ABA therapy abuse and autism center negligence can happen anywhere so it is important to be vigilant and informed about your loved one's autism treatment and therapy.  ABA therapy abuse can be the result of negligent hiring, improper training, as well as inadequate staffing and supervision at autism centers.  Autism center abuse can also occur when overly-aggressive ABA therapy techniques or "punishments" are used instead of proper ABA therapy methods.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition, which affects children and adults in various ways. Each person with autism has unique strengths and challenges, which requires individual assessment. Understanding the different ASD treatments and therapy is essential to monitoring treatment and being aware of the potential for autism abuse or autism therapy abuse.

APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS (ABA): ABA THERAPY FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTIS

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy is a common autism therapy intended to improve social, communication, and behavioral skills. ABA therapy along with speech and language therapy is often done to enhance communication abilities. Occupational therapy assists in developing daily living skills.

There are several different forms of ABA therapy.  One of the main goals of ABA therapy is to reinforce certain behaviors will lead kids to repeat those behaviors. However, some have questioned whether ABA therapy methods can be abusive, or overly aggressive where negative reinforcement or punishments are used to discourage certain behaviors in autistic individuals.

Punishments should no longer be used in ABA therapy. If you suspect that your autistic child is receiving autism treatment or ABA therapy where punishment techniques are being used or notice signs of autism abuse or ABA therapy abuse, you should take immediate action including reporting abuse or suspected abuse to law enforcement.

Some Potential Signs of ABA Therapy Abuse

Each person with autism is unique so there is often no sure way to recognize each sign of abuse in autistic individuals.  However, some potential signs of autism abuse or ABA therapy abuse can include behavioral changes such as social withdrawal, developmental regression, avoidance of specific places or people, new or aggressive behaviors, or behavioral outbursts aimed at specific places or people.  Staying informed and vigilant can help you recognize changes, or potential concerns or signs of abuse. You should always stay informed about the type of autism treatment being done, progression or regression, and any changes in treatment.  You should also be engaged with the autism center and therapy providers and communicate regularly.  Staying vigilant and identifying or recognizing any behavioral changes or regression can also be beneficial.
